The Caledonia, a new mixed use development at 450 West 17th Street, in New York's Meatpacking District, packs in three stunning roofdecks and a huge private park on the second floor courtyard. The project required us to be very nimble and be flexible and creative in ferrying an enormous amount of soil and plant material from ground level to the second, fifth, ninth and twelfth floors of this building.
It takes an enormous amount of planning and coordination to create a brand new park atop a construction site. We used a combination of new and old techniques to bring supplies to the job site and keep installation on schedule.

In just over two months, we transported and installed over 12 metric tons of special metro mix planting medium, 1,000 taxus and euonymous shrubs and several dozen mature, large caliper trees. The materials were delivered on a rotating schedule

The outdoor kitchen is a focal point of the ninth floor and twelfth floor roof decks. A bar and seating surrounds the full kitchen, and the entire area is covered with a tiered ipe pergola. The outdoor Brazilian shower acts as a private tropical storm, the oversize shower head gives off a downpour and really embelishes the suntanning experience.
Towel off, then head to the bar and enjoy something cold from the fridge. Nothing has been left out of this truly luxurious roof top garden.
